The teaching contributes to the realization of the educational objective of the Course of Study in Animal Science.

The main specific objectives of the course are:

- to acquire knowledge about the metabolic fate of nutrients in ruminant animals

- to acquire knowledge on the nutritional value of feed ingredients used in ruminant nutrition

- to understand nutritional concepts and their implications in balancing rations for ruminants

5. stimare i fabbisogni di mantenimento, accrescimento, gestazione e lattazione
6. formulare razioni bilanciate per ruminanti

1. to know, from a chemical and nutritional point of view, the main feed ingredients used in ruminant feeding 2. to calculate the nutritional value of feeds 3. to know in detail the anatomy of the digestive system in polygastric animals 4. to know in detail the fate, in terms of digestive processes and absorption, of the different nutrients contained in feeds
(proteins, lipids, fibrous and non-fibrous carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins) 5. to estimate the requirements for maintenance, growth, gestation and lactation 6. to formulate balanced rations for ruminants 7. to manage nutrients, raw materials and diets in order to modify the physiological and productive response (in terms of both
quantity and quality) of the animals, taking into consideration aspects related to both animal health and welfare.
JUDGMENT AUTONOMY
At the end of the course the student will be able:
1. to analyze and judge the feed choices of a breeder; to propose improvement solutions at farm level
2. to know, judge and solve nutritional problems by reading published scientific articles.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course the student will be able:
1. to use the technical language used in ruminants feeding and nutrition
2. to relate with breeders and other actors in the sector
3. to transmit new knowledge acquired through the reading of recently published scientific articles.

The course consists of 6 credits for a total of 60 hours, of which 40 hours of theoretical lectures and 20 hours of practical work (laboratory activities, technical visits of farms, formulation and evaluation of rations for ruminants).

If the teacher deems it appropriate, other teachers who are experts in specific topics covered in the program will be invited to hold seminars during the hours provided by the course.

The attendance is optional, recommended, and the final exam will be the same for attending and non-attending students.

The student evaluation takes place through an oral interview structured as follows:

1. The student must prepare a power point presentation deepening the knowledge of one topic chosen from among the topics covered during the course. The in-depth study of the chosen topic must take place through the research, understanding and critical discussion of recently published scientific articles (published by no more than 5 years on high-quality Journals). The student has 15 minutes for his/her oral presentation, at the end of which the teacher, through targeted questions, assesses the degree of knowledge and study of the topic chosen by the student.

2. Continuation of the oral interview on the various topics covered by the lectures and practical work: three questions, one of which aimed at verifying the learning of the formulation of rations for ruminant animals.
