Obiettivi formativi

The Ruminant Feeding and Nutrition course contributes to the realization of the educational objectives of the Master Degree in Animal Science. It provides deepened knowledge about (i) the metabolic fate of nutrients in ruminant animals, (ii) the raw materials used for the feeding of ruminants, (iii) the estimation of nutritional requirements in different physiological stages, (iv) the formulation of balanced diets for ruminants, and (iv) the relationships existing between diet and ruminant-derived food products quality (milk and meat). Furthermore, the course provides the cultural tools and the language skills necessary for the understanding and future management of the most common problems related to feeding ruminants at farm level.

Individual and group tasks will be assigned during the practical lessons. The tasks performed by the students must be delivered to the teacher on time, in accordance with the specific instructions provided each time. The teacher sends feed-back to the students by email regarding the performance of the assigned tasks, or discusses relevant aspects of the tasks during the lessons. The tasks assigned during the practical lessons do not contribute to the final evaluation.

The exams (ongoing and final) are the same for attending and non-attending students.

An ongoing evaluation is reserved for students belonging to the last cohort. The ongoing evaluation covers part of the programme, as detailed on the MOODLE platform. The students who pass the ongoing examination successfully are then evaluated at the final oral examination exclusively on the remaining part of the program. The ongoing evaluation is worth 1/4 of the final evaluation.

The final evaluation takes place through an oral interview. For the students who passed the ongoing examination successfully, the interview is structured as follows:

  1. The student must prepare a power point presentation deepening the knowledge of one topic chosen from among the topics covered during the course. The in-depth study of the chosen topic must take place through the research, understanding and critical discussion of recently published scientific articles (published by no more than 5 years on high-quality Journals). The student has 15 minutes for his/her oral presentation, at the end of which the teacher, through targeted questions, assesses the degree of knowledge and study of the topic chosen by the student as well as his/her ability to make logical connections among the different topics covered by the course. This part of the exam is worth 1/4 of the final mark.
  2. Continuation of the oral interview on the remaining topics covered by the theoretical and practical lessons. This part of the exam is worth 2/4 of the final mark.

For the students who did not pass the ongoing examination successfully, the interview is structured as follows:

  2. Continuation of the oral interview on the remaining topics covered by the theoretical and practical lessons: three questions, one of which aimed at verifying the learning of the calculation of nutritional requirements and/or the formulation of rations for ruminant animals. This part of the exam is worth 3/4 of the final mark.

A correct use of the technical language, as well as a strong ability to make logical connections among the different topics covered by the course, are required to pass the exam.
