Obiettivi formativi

Learning area: legislation and Livestock and animal production area

The course is divided into two macro-topics: animal welfare and animal rights.

As regards the theme of animal rights, a very complex and fragmented subject, which find its origins in culture and philosophy and result influenced by numerous pressure groups, currents of thought, economic interests or of another nature, will be addressed. Animal law can be consequent to reasons affecting the welfare, earnings, or health of human beings: the laws on sanitary and veterinary matters are an example. The theme of animal rights will be examined in this course from a comparative law perspective.

Animal welfare will be addressed by following an integrated approach taking into consideration all the aspects related to it in both livestock and companion animals, with references also to wild species kept in captivity. The most up-to-date methods of determining the welfare state will be presented through the study and practical compilation of dedicated checklists. The goal is to provide all the basic knowledge necessary for the assessment of animal welfare and the implementation of corrective actions aimed at increasing its levels.

Il punteggio ottenuto all’esonero sarà mediato in modo ponderato con quello ottenuto all’esame orale.

The course grade will be assessed through a written test with multiple choices and open questions about part of the course program, including the practical work. The score will be weighted averaged with the score deriving from the oral exam. In case of negative results or not attendance, the student will be requested to take an oral examination focused on the whole program as explained in the Integrated Course webpage.
